History

  • Established: 1909, after a successful election to create a new county from the northern portion of Deuel County.
  • Name Origin: Suggested by Oshkosh real estate agents John and William Twiford, who believed the area could be the “garden spot of the west”
  • Early Inhabitants: The area was a haven for the Sioux nation and a resting place for Mormons and Forty-Niners heading west.
  • Significant Events: Famous Sioux Chief Red Cloud was born here in 1821. The county was the site of the 1855 battle between the Army cavalry and Sioux tribes at Ash Hollow.
  • Economy: Northern Garden County is known for cattle ranching, while the North Platte River Valley supports prosperous farming operations.
